What Ho Chaps,

I thought I had posted this but on returning to page it appears I didn't and the OP got lost somewhere in the ether. No matter, I shall try again.

Whilst doing some research I stumbled across a rather lovely paper here: www.army.mod.uk/documents/general/rmas_occ_paper_17.pdf

It covers the changes to Sandhurst between the Boer war and 1919 and I found it jolly interesting; I thought perhaps some of you may as well
(and may not have seen it)

Hope you enjoy!

I'm bringing you a rather lovely photo I found. I sincerely hope it will create some rabid plot bunnies for a fic.
It's really Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, but I couldn't help remembering moments such as:

Biggles took out one of his three remaining cigarettes, broke it in halves, gave Algy one half,
and then lighted both with the same match.

(As if the act of smoking the same cigarette together would be a tad too much for the young readers to take...)

There is this series of Biggles book covers that won't stop fascinating me with its utter weirdness/hilariousness. I think they are from Knights Books. We already had some of them here. I've been browsing ebay lately and found two more I haven't seen before. Seriously... I mean, what?

I am rereading the 'Spitfire Parade' now, I finally got hold of an English copy. What really bothers me, though, is that they are not using their radios at all. In some of the stories the plot could be seriously changed if they used the radio, so that might be why Johns conveniently 'forgot' it existed, when he was adapting the stories from the WWI ones... And this in turn makes it an even bigger bummer. Oh well, at least Bertie is there and his presence makes it so much better :)

Here, have this great scene from the Battle of Britain film to set things right. (I might have posted it before, can't remember :) )

Also, have this 'summary clip' from the Czech Battle of Britain film the 'Dark Blue World'. I told you about it a few times in the past. I do recommend it, although it's really rather sad. Tell me if you would want to watch it.

Biggles and Ginger vs. Holmes and Watson

This evening while visiting my mother's house I found a couple of dramatised readings of Biggles stories. Unfortunately they're on cassette tapes - otherwise I'd just upload them and share the files. I don't have a cassette player and I don't expect to have one any time soon, so I thought I'd see if anyone out there would like to claim either or both of these? They are:

1. Biggles Learns to Fly, read by Tim Piggott-Smith.
The jacket reads: "Biggles - aged seventeen and with less that fifteen hours flying experience - is sent to tackle the enemy in what often seem suicidal missions. In a theatre of war where instinct and lightening-fast reactions are the most important assets a man can possess, Biggles must learn to be a real flier quickly - or die..."
(2 hours 51 minutes approx)

2. Biggles Flies East, full dramatisation starring Tim Piggott-Smith, Richard Bebb, Roger Blake and Simon Mattocks.
The jacket reads: "Millions of avid fans worldwide have already enjoyed the adventures of cult hero and flying ace Squadron Leader James Bigglesworth - better know as Biggles. Now you can listen to these fast-paced, thrill-packed stories in a full dramatization on tape."
(155 minutes)

Each story takes up two cassette tapes.

If you're interested, drop me a line at prudencedearly(at)gmail.com and we can arrange for me to post them out. I'll add a note to this post if/when they get snapped up. First in, first served :)

I was browsing through my old Biggles folder yesterday and found something. Well, two things, both of them can be labeled as 'horror'. Pity I didn't remember it sooner, when the horror cover topic was on.

So you get a new horror topic. )

I am supposed to be writing my thesis, so what am I doing? Yes, I am tiding and improving the Biggles & Co.'s residence in my bookcase. I made a nice job of it, so I can't help but boast about it.

The white books are the Czech editions and the colourful pack are the English ones I've got from the ebay since August.
Ginger has a little RAF badge, but it's too blury to see.
The big book in the front is the Last Zeppelin comic book, which you will be getting from me soon ;)

Show me your own Biggles' apartments, pretty pretty please?

Those of you, who are familiar with the plot of 'Biggles Flies South' check this piece of news:

I'm only the more flabbergasted, because I've been rereading the book just now

I had some time for reading this afternoon. News: Johns became a pilot and then a flying instructor.
These two excerpts have again the great sense for detail and the Johns-ish humour.

I started to read the 'By Jove, Biggles!' I had got from Ebay the other day. As you probably know, it's Johns' biography written by Peter Berresford Ellis and Piers Williams. I have the version from 1985.

I must say I really like the book. It's much better than I thought it would be, mostly because of the many Johns' articles in the text. I'm only somewhere around the page 35 but there have already been two pieces of text very worth mentioning. As it is so quiet here lately I decided to post about them.

One for Sorrow, Two for Joy... )

Here I am, active again!
I was just wondering if you know about this particular ace of the Battle of Britain.
http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/james_ginger_lacey.htm

I found him in a book I read once. First I stared in disbelief and then, I suppose, I started to laugh :D Either there were some Biggles-readers in his squadron, who nicknamed him seeing the opportunity, or he was just extremely fortunate with all his (nick)names!

I seem to be bored tonight and so I got creative and started doodling...

I want this community to be alive and I thought some of you might find those doodles amusing, so I'm posting it. One of the tonight's doodles of the 266.sqd airfield and one very old comic strip of Biggles (with Mark Way probably) :D

I couldn't resist bringing this news story to people's attention:
'Biggles' tale saved crash pilot.

Five points to whoever can first suggest which story the pilot had in mind ^_^
