I am supposed to be writing my thesis, so what am I doing? Yes, I am tiding and improving the Biggles & Co.'s residence in my bookcase. I made a nice job of it, so I can't help but boast about it.

Photobucket

The white books are the Czech editions and the colourful pack are the English ones I've got from the ebay since August.
Ginger has a little RAF badge, but it's too blury to see.
The big book in the front is the Last Zeppelin comic book, which you will be getting from me soon ;)

Show me your own Biggles' apartments, pretty pretty please?

The Czech editions are so impressively *uniform* :D My Biggles shelves are distressingly scruffy, which is partly the fault of my lack of shelf-space and tendency to take pity on ugly old copies, but mostly the fault of the ninety-thousand different versions of the English language editions D:

Well, since I'm also procrastinating over my thesis, here's my shelf ^_^ Badly photoshopped, because half my bookshelf is behind the wardrobe so I can't get the whole shelf in one photo >_< Click for a close-up.

Book of the movie? *raise eyebrow*

I kind of like it when there are so many you have to start stacking them sideways. It's like a overflow of Biggles' awesomeness :)

Book of the movie? *raise eyebrow*

God. I know. I spotted it lurking in a second-hand book stall - judging by the protective wrapper it's an *ex-library copy*, would you believe, though I can't begin to imagine which library would want it @_@ - and I had to buy it because. Well. The horror, the horror. If you thought the film was bad, the book is *infinitely worse*. It's got 'Making Of' and actor biography sections at the end, containing such pearls of wisdom as this:

'Trying to make the character come alive from the books often produced a very odd, frozen-in character who didn't ever really come alive. One-dimensional characters may have worked in early films but today they couldn't be given away with hot tea. So Kent Walwin came up with the idea of a young man of the eighties....'

At that point my brain shuts down.

There are also some moments which are just desperately sad, like Peter Cushing saying in his interview that 'I have a feeling that 'Biggles' will do for its young men what 'Star Wars' did for its principals: they all made it big.' Oh, God, they actually thought it would be a hit >_<

For some reason, a few gems in the novelisation didn't make it into the movie. Such as the fact that Merlin was Arthur's Time Twin. I WISH I COULD MAKE UP STUFF LIKE THIS, IT IS PURE GOLD.

Because my life is UTTERLY TRAGIC and AWEFUL I only have the teeniest bit of shelf to show. I am currently living in Japan, and have only been able to bring a fraction of my books with me, so I've mostly stockpiled the new paperbacks to have small, portable, robust things to hoik about with me.

Enjoy beautiful camera phone picture quality :D Some Gimlet on the right hand side, and I'm missing in France and Learns to Fly as have lent them out to people to try and spread the love.

Back home my Biggles shelves are an overflowing mad dump of all eras and sizes - I also have several ginormous French omnibuses to a) get all the Air Ace stories (I think the British Library is getting suspicious of my photocopying attempts >>) and b) for Steely novels :DDD

I do love the new Red Fox editions; they totally make up for the general awfulness of the old Red Fox covers. (Which still aren't nearly as awful as that run by Dean & Son where everyone looks like this (http://www.biggles.com/78%20Biggles%20Flies%20to%20Work.jpg), but then few things are, except maybe the first edition cover of Biggles Takes A Hand (http://www.biggles.com/75%20Biggles%20Takes%20a%20Hand.jpg). THAT IS NOT VON STALHEIN, PLEASE GET OFF MY BOOK @_@.

Also Gimlet + Hilary Mantel fttotalw.

Oh my goodness, those covers are appalling. Heaven forbid that the illustrator read a couple of pages beforehand.

Being a von Stalhein fangirl, I get particularly cross with the way he's depicted >_< HE'S MEANT TO BE THIN AND GOOD-LOOKING AND SLIGHTLY FOPPISH, GUYS. PLEASE TO BE DEPICTING HIM AS SUCH. I've so far only found one illustration of him which is remotely how he's described in the text, and that's this one (http://www.biggles.info/Details/42/Illustrations/Page128.jpg) from Biggles Follows On. Apart from that, we're mostly condemned to scary square-head VS (http://www.biggles.info/Details/07/Illustrations/Page174.jpg) (Flies East - a shame, because the illustrations are really pretty otherwise), just kind of weird VS (http://www.biggles.info/Details/35/Illustrations/Page98.jpg) (Takes A Holiday), bizarrely (http://www.biggles.info/Details/52/Illustrations/Page127.jpg) unshaven (http://www.biggles.com/75%20Biggles%20Takes%20a%20Hand.jpg) VS (In Australia and Takes A Hand) and whatever the hell this is supposed to be VS (http://www.biggles.info/Details/20/Illustrations/Page187.jpg) (In The Baltic). I mean, dear god. What. I can't even.

I know the other characters suffer too on occasion, but I can't help but feel that poor Erich gets it more often than most.

You are so right! The first time Biggles sets eyes on vS he is full of admiration because vS is in dashing Arab mode. Then "What he was wondering as he sank into sleep was if a slim, effeminate dandy with a game leg could change his identity to that of the brilliant, athletic, hard-riding Arab who was known mythically on both sides of the lines as El Shereef..." Pity the illustrators did not read the text!

Omg I have that Flies to Work cover. I also have this (http://www.abebooks.com/images/RareBooks/Biggles/black-peril.jpg) SUPER TRAUMATIC cover :DDD

Oh... poor VS. He really does get a rough time of it ;_;

Yes I am planning to Hilary Mantel all over my holiday :DDD

I know >_< It's especially galling when some of the editions are so beautiful - the first edition cover of 'Flies East' is just beautiful, I'd have a poster of it on my wall if I could. And the internal illustrations can be pretty amazing too - Sindall and Stead on their day both produce gorgeous stuff. However, I guess the pretty stuff doesn't generate as much unintentional comedy as the awful, so I guess it has its recompenses :D

I'd love to see the Czech horrors :D Maybe we should open an entry on Horrifying Biggles Covers We Have Known. Possibly with a poll so we can all vote for the Worst Biggles Picture Ever.

Flies East 1st ed. cover

You say you would like a poster. Not exactly a poster, but you can buy a nice reproduction wrapper. They cost £15, which is more than I paid for most of my books, so I have not bought one, but they are very attractive. It is these reproductions that are now used on Roger Harris's website.

Oh, awesome! I'm still hoping to be able to buy myself that dream first edition with dust jacket one day (you know, shortly after I make my first million...), but do you have a link for the sale of reproductions?

I sent you a message to avoid putting the email contact addy on-line. By the way, have you looked at the "Biggles of the Camel Squadron" jacket? It is a full wraparound Howard Leigh - really gorgeous; I might get one of those and frame it. There is a picture of it in the June 2011 "Biggles Flies Again".

:( I'm very sadface because all my lovely Biggles books are still trapped at the back of the family storage unit - and even if I could dig them out (which I've tried and failed to do), I have no bookcase to put them on. *fail*

However, all these pictures are lovely! And they give me extra impetus to try digging again. I want to retrieve at least a few favourite volumes, if I can. Thanks for the burst of Biggles love!

Yes, they're all still there, hidden underneath 5 tons of other things *roll eyes* One day (soon, I hope) I will be able to bring them all out and arrange them carefully in the correct order, and have them sitting prettily on a proper bookshelf.

I'm loving this, by the way - seeing everyone's collections. Good idea!

Yay! I tunneled through and found my boxes of Biggles :D Further photos at the same link above, as I couldn't resist, especially when I uncovered all those pretty dust jackets. I shall be reading "Biggles Gets His Men" purely due to the slashy title and the bizarre front cover illustration.

Gosh, they're gorgeous! I have immense envy of the uniform height of your copies, it panders to my obsessive tendencies :D I've ordered my copies chronologically by dramatic date, as far as I can, but this means that my various height editions are all jumbled up together, a situation which subtly offends me.

May I ask how far you are from a complete set? I've got a loooong way to go yet, but you seem like you must be getting pretty close!

*snorffle* I know exactly how you feel.

Strictly speaking, it's my Dad's collection, which I inherited. There were only two Biggles books he couldn't get hold of: Biggles Scores a Bull and... I want to say Biggles in the Blue. He managed to get copies of everything else, in various forms. I think he had the complete Gimlet and complete Worrals, possibly all of the science fiction stuff, and a number of random books, including "Mossyface" which may be the most unlikely name for a romance novel that I've ever heard.

I've got the books in the order in which they take place. I got all the ones that was ever translated into swedish and am now working on the English. I earn them by washing Taxi cars... ;)
In the same bookcase is a swedish Biggles audio book, a swedish book about Biggles and his impact on sweden. There is also plenty of Gimlet, Worrals and anything else by Johns that I could get my hands on, and a few swedish comic albums.

The first is my aviation bookcase. Thanks to lots of recent goodies on eBay etc., the non-Johns items have been squeezed out!
The second is my fav. acquisition for several years - a 1935 Flies East where I was the only bidder - gloat, gloat! It has lost its spine, but hey, it is 75 years old!
