Fic: Wings, Biggles/Mark Way

Hello! Just in case anyone is still around, here's a fic that was inspired by a re-read of the First World War books. Mark Way is a wonderful character and he deserves a lot more page-space than he got: hence fic!

Title: Wings
Pairing: Biggles/Mark Way
Word count: 5100
Genre: Romance
Warnings: It's the First World War. Recounted violence, I guess? Nothing graphic or on-screen.
Summary: Biggles has occasionally wondered if anything can disturb his former observer's habitual calm. Finally, while on leave after taking revenge on the man who shot Mark down, he finds out.

That was lovely, I do enjoy Mark Way. My one question is would they have called them Tui down south that early on, or would they have called them Parson Birds? Not that it honestly matters because you put them successfully into a Biggles story!

:) Thank-you - and I'm pleased to meet another Mark Way fan! He's the absolute best.
...Yes, I dithered a bit about the tui, I must admit, but decided that in such a romantic moment even Mark might go for the more romantic name. (I have a headcanon that he had a Maori grandmother, which is undoubtedly problematic, but there you go.) And one day I might even write the sequel in which, between adventures, they do indeed listen to a tui singing by moonlight. WEJ got quite lyrical on occasion and it's too good an opportunity to miss!

Isn't he just? I have a few scraps of stories about him but you have written him much better. He could have had a Maori grandmother; it may be culturally easier if she had been raised by missionaries or attended a missionary school, but that may be my own bias coming in there.

ooh... trying not to be importunate here, but it's difficult!

I'm glad to know that Mark could've had a Maori ancestress; I think he'd need every ounce of that warrior mindset, at however many removes, to keep his end up (as it were) around the person Biggles became. He managed it effortlessly in "Learns to Fly" unlike almost everyone else Biggles ever came into contact with; Raymond is the only other one I can think of off-hand, and he had the advantage of rank.

Funny you should mention Raymond - I'm trying to bully him into a story right now (though it may never get past the stage Mark is at at the moment). You're quite right, both of them are...independent isn't the right word, but they don't require Biggles' opinion before they do something (or in Algy's case, after they do something). I get the feeling their war would be similar if Biggles hadn't been there. Interesting thought...

The ancestry thing wouldn't be too difficult to wrangle in I shouldn't think, given the intermarriage of the early years of NZ.

Raymond would be a tough character to wrangle, so I take my hat off to you – and yes, he and Mark seem to be self-sufficient in a way that many of the others don't.

Except for Algy, of course. I love WW1 Algy – he's such a dork, and gives Biggles conniptions on such a regular basis.
