If you can grab a copy of this every now and then I recommend it.
Here, I will repeat, for your interest, a letter recently received (July 3rd) about WE Johns.
Further to the article about TE Larwence (RAF News No 1226) it may be or interest to know that Larwense was recruited by WE Johns- the creator of 'Biggles'- who was working in the Inspectorate of Recruiting
Johns, who was in fact a Flying Officer, rejected Larwence, being suspicious of his alias and alerted by the medical report which exposed his masochistic wounds.
Shortly thereafter, however, Johns was ordered by the Air Ministry to accept the application. Larwence then confessed his true identity.
Johns, somewhat miffed by the whole affair, promptly phoned the authorities at RAF Uxbridge and tipped them off as to who was heading their way.
At a tangent, Cpl Routledge (Star Letter, Ladies, leave fighting to the men, RAF News No 1226) may wish to hear that another character created by Johns was the redoubtable Flight Officer "Worrals of the WAAF"
This feisty soul was an amalgam of his friends, the aviatrisses Amy Johnson and Pauline Gower, Head of the female arm of the Air Transport Auxilary.
These two girls give food for thought when it comes to gender equality.
"Worral Carries On" (1942) indeed
G McClure- Hall, Gp Capt RAF (Retd, Sent by email).

yep, that's him alright- TE Lawrence being all sneaky like.
